RRLC Scholarships 

 

Diesel Mechanic AND Heavy Equipment Operator Scholarships 

Scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $1500 are available to students who are pursuing a career in Diesel Mechanics or Heavy Equipment Operations and are 23 years or younger.  Applicants must be accepted into an accredited school that features classes in these topics.

 

Emanuel Fritz Memorial Scholarship:   Professor Emanuel Fritz is known as a pioneer in the redwood region for his efforts in promoting the use and sustainability of second growth redwood forests.  He was instrumental in the development of the California Forest Practice Rules, the purchase of Jackson State Demonstration Forest, and is the founder of the Redwood Region Logging Conference.  This scholarship is provided to students in the spirit and memory of Emanuel Fritz.

 

Upon qualification, three cash scholarships up to $2,000 each will be awarded to a freshman, sophomore, junior or returning senior who is currently enrolled in an undergraduate forestry program at California Polytechnic State University, Humboldt State University, Oregon State University and/or University of California, Berkeley.

 

 

Kent L. Holmgren & Larry Holmgren Memorial Scholarship:  Kent was a fourth generation Humboldt County resident. He was a timberland owner, a logger, a registered professional forester and a sawmill owner. Mr. Holmgren was involved with the development of State forest practice rules and forester licensing regulations. He served on the College of the Redwoods Advisory Board and on the Redwood Region Logging Conference Board. He was a member of the Forest Landowners of California and the Association of California Loggers.

 

Larry Holmgren was the son of Kent & Shirley Holmgren. He followed in his father’s footsteps becoming involved in the timber industry.  Larry started out working for Simonson Timber, was an independent faller, a logger for Eel River Sawmill, and ended doing log procurement for Schmidbauer.  Larry’s career has covered every aspect of the timber industry.  He served on theRRLC Board, the Pacific Logging Congress Board, and as was the vice President of the Northern California Log Scaling and Grading Bureau.  He was instrumental in developing the RRLC High School Forestry competition and Scholarships programs.

Upon qualification, up to two $1,000 cash scholarships will be awarded to a freshman or sophomore who is currently enrolled in the forestry program at the College of the Redwoods (CR), and has at least 2 semesters left in the year before graduation.  Person(s) completing their final semester at CR and have been accepted at an accredited forestry school to continue their forestry education are also eligible.  This scholarship is provided to students inthe spirit and memory of Keny & Larry Holmgren.

 

 

Jere Melo Memorial Scholarship:    Jere Melo was a long-time professional forester in the Fort Bragg area. He graduated with a degree in forestry from UC Berkeley and moved to Fort Bragg in 1966. He was on the job in August, 2011 when he was murdered while investigating a reported marijuana grown on private timberland.  His wife, Madeleine, established the Jere Melo Scholarship in December, 2011. 

 

Upon qualification, up to a $2,000 scholarship(s) will be awarded to a freshman, sophomore, junior or returning senior who is currently enrolled in an undergraduate forestry program at California Polytechnic State University, Humboldt State University, University of California Berkeley or Oregon State University.  This award will specifically target students enrolled in a program to become a Professional Forester.

The Forest Foundation Scholarship:   

The Forest Foundation which co-sponsors this scholarship upholds the mission to foster public understanding of forest ecosystems in California by providing balanced, science-based information on environmental, economic, and societal uses of forest resources for present and succeeding generations.

 

Upon qualification, up to a $1,000 scholarship(s), will be awarded to a freshman, sophomore, junior or returning senior who is currently enrolled in an undergraduate forestry program at California Polytechnic State University, Humboldt State University, or University of California, Berkeley.  In addition, a graduate from one of these universities with a degree in forestry and who is enrolled in a graduate program or law school may also apply.  This award will specifically target students interested combining their forestry education with the following fields of interest: communications, legislative policy, and natural resource administration or education.

RRLC Agriculture Business & Economics Scholarship: 

 

The Redwood Region Logging Conference is offering a scholarship(s) up to $2,000. 

 

Qualifications:  Freshman, Sophomore, Junior or Returning Senior who is currently enrolled in an undergraduate Agricultural Economics or Business major at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, CSU in Chico, Humboldt State University, Fresno State University and UC Davis.

 

Target Individuals:  Undergrad student pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Economics or Business.  Strongest candidates will be those individuals pursuing a career within the Wood Products or Resource Management Industries of the Redwood Region.  Recognizing local students will also be strongly considered.  Majors may include, but are not limited to, Agricultural Business, Business Management and Finance.

 

 

RRLC High School Forestry Scholarship:  The Redwood Region Logging Conference will award a scholarship(s) to qualified high school graduates from Humboldt, Del Norte, Trinity, Lake, or Mendocino Counties who will be attending college the following year as a natural resource or forestry major.  Amounts will vary depending on the number and qualifications of applicants.
